The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected President of Nigeria in the 2027 general election.
Sowore made the pledge during a recent interview while outlining his plans for Nigeria's economy. When asked directly whether he would reintroduce petrol subsidy, the AAC candidate responded:
“I would bring back subsidy.”
According to Sowore, fuel subsidy itself is not necessarily the problem, arguing that the major concern is how the policy is administered and managed.
He also claimed that the Federal Government is still effectively subsidising certain areas of the economy despite the official removal of the petrol subsidy, suggesting that the policy has simply been given different names.
Sowore further argued that Nigeria's inability to produce enough petroleum products locally contributes to the situation, saying the country continues to rely on measures that support the cost of petroleum and other economic activities.
His position represents a significant departure from the current administration's decision to remove petrol subsidy, a policy that has contributed to major changes in fuel prices and intensified debates over the cost of living.
Sowore's promise is therefore likely to become part of the broader 2027 presidential campaign debate, particularly around fuel prices, economic reforms, government spending and how best to reduce the financial burden on Nigerians.
