The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has defended President Bola Tinubu against criticisms over the lifestyle of political office holders and government spending amid Nigeria's economic challenges.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, Adedeji argued that Tinubu does not live an extravagant lifestyle despite occupying the country's highest political office.
According to the NRS chairman, the President remains focused on his official responsibilities and maintains a relatively modest daily routine. Adedeji claimed that Tinubu sometimes walks from his residence to his office and only uses vehicles when travelling to the airport.
He further claimed that the President eats only once a day and has not travelled outside Nigeria in the past three months.
Addressing criticism surrounding the expensive vehicles used by the presidential convoy, Adedeji argued that Tinubu could afford such vehicles even before becoming President.
He questioned whether the President could not afford a luxury vehicle such as a Cadillac Escalade, given his personal financial capacity.
Adedeji also challenged Nigerians to point to instances where Tinubu had frequently attended parties, gone on holidays or otherwise displayed an extravagant lifestyle since assuming office.
The NRS chairman's comments come amid continued public debate over government expenditure, the cost of governance and the lifestyle of public officials, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with rising living costs.
Adedeji maintained that Tinubu's routine and commitment to his duties demonstrate that the President is more focused on governance than personal luxury.
