Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has come under criticism from some social media users after sharing glamorous photos to mark her 49th birthday on the same day members of the Yoruba movie industry gathered to bury veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The actress marked her birthday by posting a series of beautiful photos online alongside a heartfelt prayer expressing gratitude to God for His faithfulness throughout the different seasons of her life.
Funke wrote:
“Through every season, lesson, win, mistake, and challenge, God has remained my strength and shield.”
While the actress’s birthday celebration was met with goodwill from many of her fans and followers, some social media users expressed disappointment over the timing of the post.
Critics argued that, considering the industry was mourning the death and burying a veteran colleague on the same day, Funke should have shown more restraint with her public birthday celebration. Some users questioned whether the actress should have postponed or toned down her birthday activities in honour of the late Taiwo Hassan.
One user, Kanel, wrote:
“If I were you, Aunty Funke, I woulda forgo the celebration of my birth for the year. Today should be all about the passing of Ogogo. But we are not the same person. Happy birthday to you, and I wish you long life in good health. I wish for you to continue to prosper.”
Another user, Constantinople, criticised the actress more strongly, writing:
“A colleague of yours just died even though you sent your condolences yesterday, and so? A colleague and a legend, but here u are posting a photo shoot coz you’re too hungry to post on ur birthday. What a good human being you are. Congratulations hbd! Hurrrrraaayy yeye”
Similarly, Ayofe questioned the timing of the post, asking:
“Shey you no dey read the room no? Na birthday be the next thing to dey post?”
Another commenter, Olayinka Mujeeb Aden, expressed his displeasure, writing:
“Aunty Funke, shame on you! We are mourning the death of Ogogo. And you dey post about birthday. Omo, this is not fair”
OAR Azeez also weighed in, suggesting that Funke could have postponed her birthday celebration in view of the loss. He wrote:
“Why you no shift your birthday to another day? You lost a prominent person in your industry, which comes to sober reflection. Remember that death is inevitable”
The controversy has therefore sparked a wider conversation online about how public figures should balance personal celebrations with moments of mourning within their professional communities.
While Funke Akindele has not indicated that her birthday celebration was intended to disregard Taiwo Hassan’s passing, the reactions show that some fans expected a more subdued public appearance from her on a day the industry was gathered to bid farewell to one of its veterans.
Today is my birthday.🎉

My heart is full of gratitude to God for all He has done, all He is doing, and all that is still to come.
Through every season, every lesson, every win, every mistake and every challenge, God has remained my strength and my shield. Even in moments when I… pic.twitter.com/JhHHchqGUQ
