The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed reports claiming that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has been breached.
The Commission described the reports as “false and unfounded”, stating that the video currently circulating on social media is a recycled report from 2024 that had previously been debunked.
In a statement issued by NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, and shared on the Commission’s official X handle on Thursday, the agency categorically stated that its National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been compromised.
“The Commission National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been breached or compromised at any point,” NIMC said.
The Commission also assured Nigerians that it operates a “robust, multi-layered security infrastructure” designed to safeguard the personal information of registered citizens and legal residents.
According to NIMC, the security measures are maintained in line with international best practices to protect sensitive identity information and prevent unauthorised access.
The agency expressed concern over the circulation of unverified information, warning that such claims could mislead members of the public and create unnecessary panic.
NIMC therefore urged Nigerians to disregard the contents of the viral video and rely only on information released through its official communication channels for updates concerning the National Identity Management System.
The clarification comes amid renewed social media discussions over the alleged compromise of the NIN database, with NIMC maintaining that there has been no breach of its identity database.
