The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee responsible for coordinating activities for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, scheduled for October 1, 2026.
The committee has unveiled a programme of activities that will culminate in a nationwide broadcast by President Bola Tinubu on October 1.
The development was disclosed by Chris Ugwuegbulam, Head of the Information and Public Relations Department in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the committee held its inaugural meeting on Thursday. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office, Mrs Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens.
Akume said the anniversary would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to reflect on the contributions, sacrifices and legacies of the country's founding fathers and heroines who played significant roles in the struggle for independence from colonial rule.
He noted that Nigeria's achievements since independence were built on the foundation established by the country's nationalists.
The SGF also said the anniversary would provide an opportunity for the Tinubu administration to showcase its achievements and highlight ongoing efforts to reposition the country through its reform initiatives.
According to him, the celebration comes against the backdrop of the socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria, making it an opportunity to highlight the government's efforts in addressing them.
However, Akume stressed that the 2026 Independence Anniversary celebrations would be low-key, while urging members of the committee to work with urgency because of the limited time remaining before October 1.
The nationwide presidential broadcast is expected to serve as the major highlight of the anniversary programme as Nigeria prepares to mark 66 years of independence.
