Veteran Yoruba actor Lere Paimo has responded to a recent seniority claim involving his colleague, Pete Edochie, who had challenged actors claiming to have started their careers before him to come forward and prove their assertions.
Paimo addressed the issue during an interview with fellow actor Kunle Afod, where he stated that he had already begun his acting career before Pete Edochie entered the industry.
According to the veteran actor, he started acting professionally in 1958, which he noted was four years before Edochie began his own career.
Speaking about his early days in the industry, Paimo recalled meeting legendary theatre practitioner Hubert Ogunde, whom he described as senior to him and other actors at the time.
He also reflected on the movie industry of that era, noting that major productions were already being made when he began his acting journey.
“I started acting in 1958. I met Hubert Ogunde, who was senior to me and others, and there were big movies produced back then,” Paimo said.
His comments come amid an ongoing conversation about seniority and the history of the Nigerian acting profession, particularly among veterans who began their careers during the early development of the country's film and theatre industries.
