NLC, TUC Set for Crucial Talks With FG Over Petrol Prices, Wages

Organised labour is set to meet with the Federal Government on Tuesday as negotiations over petrol prices, workers’ wages and other welfare concerns enter a crucial stage.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are expected to demand concrete proposals from the government on issues that have remained unresolved following an earlier meeting between both sides.

Among the unions’ key demands is a reduction in petrol prices to levels recorded in 2024, as well as tax relief for workers and immediate wage awards to cushion the impact of rising living costs.

Labour is also pushing for negotiations on a new minimum wage ahead of the government’s proposed review scheduled for June 2027.

The unions’ latest position comes amid the threat of nationwide industrial action if their demands are not adequately addressed before the expiration of their ultimatum.

The Tuesday meeting is therefore expected to play a significant role in determining the next step to be taken by organised labour.

Meanwhile, the Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to pay eligible retirees three months of outstanding fuel-subsidy palliatives amounting to N75,000.

The pensioners’ group also appealed for improved access to healthcare benefits for retirees.

The NLC has maintained that it expects the government to come to the negotiating table with concrete proposals addressing the outstanding issues, particularly petrol prices, wage negotiations and other public-sector labour concerns.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine whether both sides can reach an agreement or whether organised labour will proceed with further industrial action.
