Soldier Manhandle Veteran Actor Chiwetalu Agu For Wearing Biafra Outfit While Sharing Food For Less Privilege.

According to the Nigerian Army, Chiwetalu Agu, a Nollywood actor, was arrested for seeking support for the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Troops Arrest Chiwetalu Agu While Soiciting Support for Proscribed IPOB, stated Army Spokesman Onyema Nwachukwu in a statement on Thursday.

The army maintained that, contrary to popular belief, the actor was just detained and not brutalized.

The statement read in part, “Troops of Nigerian Army have arrested one Chiwetalu Agu while inciting members of the public and soliciting for support for the proscribed IPOB.

“Dressed in a very well known attire of the proscribed group, Chiwetalu Agu was picked up for questioning while inciting members of the public to join the proscribed group. Though he attempted puting up some resistance when troops made effort to take him into custody, he was not assaulted or subjected to brutalisation.”

While the army recognizes Nigerians' fundamental right to freedom of movement and expression as guaranteed in the constitution, any individual or group inciting the public to cause mayhem or disrupt law and order is a breach, according to the army.

“It is therefore pertinent to state that while exercising such freedoms, it must be done within the confines of the law, bearing in mind the imperative for peace, and national security,” it said.

According to the army, any individual or group viewed as projecting and advancing IPOB's cause or operations is still prohibited.

According to the statement, Agu had obviously displayed an uncharitable inclination to undermine regional peace and security, and as a result, he was brought into jail for a preliminary investigation.

The army added, “It is important to once again place on record that the allegation that he was brutalised is false and should be disregarded accordingly.
