Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Government has officially reopened the Alaba International Market and specific sections of the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, Lagos. The decision to reopen these markets comes after their closure due to concerns related to improper waste disposal and environmental violations.
This announcement was conveyed through an official statement posted on the Lagos State Waste Management Authority's Facebook page. The statement quoted the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who underscored that the move to reopen the markets is not driven by political motives but is intended to foster a clean and healthy business environment.
Wahab explained, "The decision to reopen the markets follows a rigorous assessment and implementation of stringent environmental standards. These standards were established to ensure that businesses in the state operate in a manner that safeguards the environment and the well-being of the people. I want to emphasize that the closure of these markets was not based on ethnic or political considerations but was undertaken to ensure cleanliness and environmental sustainability for the benefit of all residents."
The commissioner emphasized the significance of maintaining a balance between commerce and environmental health. He also stressed that the government is committed to enforcing these standards by sealing off any market or corporate organization found in violation, further emphasizing the commitment to environmental well-being and sustainable business practices.
