Funke Akindele's "A Tribe Called Judah" Makes Nollywood History with Billion-Naira Record

Funke Akindele's film, "A Tribe Called Judah," has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first Nollywood title to surpass a billion naira at the box office. Film One Studios officially confirmed this record-breaking achievement in a press statement released on January 4, 2024.


The movie premiered on December 15, 2023, and quickly gained traction, securing ₦113.3 million during its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood opening weekend of the year. The success continued, leading to sold-out showings nationwide and even extending to the United Kingdom.


Kene Okwuosa, the Group CEO of Film House Group, expressed excitement about this remarkable feat, stating that the film's success signifies a golden era for Nigerian cinema. According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), "A Tribe Called Judah" concluded 2023 with a total gross of ₦854.3 million, making it not only the highest-grossing Nollywood title for the year but also the highest ever.


The film's plot revolves around five brothers who unite to carry out a heist to save their mother, portrayed by Funke Akindele as Jedidah Judah. The movie's unprecedented financial success underscores the thriving state of the Nigerian creative industry and its global appeal.
