Benin Traditional Council Suspends Five Functionaries For An 'unauthorized' Visit To The Ooni Of Ife

Five functionaries from the Benin Kingdom have been suspended by the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) due to their alleged misconduct during a visit to the Ooni of Ife.

The accused individuals, identified as Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre (Ihogbe), S.E. Aigbiremwen, Efesieoghoba (Ogbelaka), Ogbeide Osagie, and Osamudiame Edo, were reported to have falsely represented themselves as emissaries of the Oba of Benin during their interaction with the Ooni of Ife.

In a statement released by the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin, Chief Sam Ugbe, it was revealed that the functionaries provided inaccurate and disjointed accounts of the historical relationship between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife.

The BTC denounced their actions as sacrilegious and described them as a "show of shame and falsehood" against Benin customs.

Chief Sam Ugbe urged the public to disregard the misinformation spread by the accused individuals and advised them to refer to official sources for accurate information regarding the historical connections between the two ancient monarchies.

Citing the authority of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, the BTC announced the suspension of the accused functionaries from their traditional roles.

The general public has been cautioned against engaging with these individuals during their suspension period.
