The BrickHall School community in Abuja bid farewell to four-year-old pupil Miguel Ovoke, who passed away tragically during feeding hours at school. Miguel choked on a piece of meat during lunch on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, and was rushed to the Excel Specialist Hospital in Kaura. Despite efforts to save him, Miguel was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The death certificate, issued by the hospital on April 24, 2024, confirmed Miguel's cause of death as "aspiration on meat while feeding at school." Both the school and the Ovoke family expressed their grief and shared plans to honor Miguel's memory.
In a joint press conference, the school and the Ovoke family announced their intention to establish an educational foundation in Miguel's name, providing scholarships to students in need. They emphasized the importance of respecting the family's privacy and urged against protests.
The school reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students. Additionally, they announced plans to name the early years' Resource Room at BrickHall School in memory of Miguel Ovoke. Furthermore, the school pledged to support the Miguel Ovoke Foundation by granting scholarships to underprivileged children.
In a statement, the Ovoke family expressed their gratitude for the positive steps taken by BrickHall School to address the incident and acknowledged the outpouring of support from the community. They also highlighted their intention to preserve Miguel's memory through the educational foundation and appreciated the efforts made to honor his legacy.
