“I thought his son said they own Nigeria?” – Mixed Reactions as Appeal Court Removes MC Oluomo as NURTW President

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has affirmed Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the legally recognized President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The judgment also upheld the decision of the National Industrial Court on March 11, 2024, which declared Baruwa the rightful leader of the union.

At a press briefing on Friday, November 15, Baruwa criticized the inauguration of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, as the new NURTW President. He described the move as a mockery of the judiciary and a violation of court orders issued on March 11 and November 8. Both judgments restrained the Yasin-led faction from interfering in the union's operations under Baruwa’s leadership.

Call for Action

Baruwa urged the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation to enforce the Appeal Court's judgment to maintain peace, order, and respect for the rule of law.

Court Verdict

The appellate court, led by Justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi, dismissed an appeal by Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, and others loyal to MC Oluomo. The court ruled that their case lacked merit and upheld Baruwa’s presidency. The panel also awarded N100,000 in costs against the appellants in favor of the respondents.

Online Reactions

The news sparked discussions online, with many netizens trolling MC Oluomo, his supporters, and those who previously celebrated his inauguration. Comments included:

Francis Osazuwa: “I thought his son said they own Nigeria?”

Brenda Anukagod_: “What happens to Iyabo Ojo’s congratulatory messages now?”

_ultraboi: “They should arrest his son and lock him up for life!”

Shillow_money: “What will happen to all those congratulatory messages now?”

Lizzy Bae507: “What will happen to the son now?”

The ruling solidifies Baruwa’s position as NURTW President and reinforces the judiciary’s authority in resolving union disputes.
