South-South Leader Edwin Clark Passes Away at 97

Elder statesman and former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, has passed away at the age of 97.


According to a statement from his family, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) chairman died on Monday night, February 17, 2025.

“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday, February 17, 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Further details will be announced later.”


His Life and Legacy


Born in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Edwin Clark pursued his early education in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene before advancing his studies at the Government Teacher Training College, now Delta State University, Abraka. He briefly worked as a teacher before traveling abroad to obtain a law degree.


Clark played a key role in Nigeria’s political history, serving in the administrations of military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and head of state General Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975. He was also a member of an advisory committee to the military governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor, in 1966, before being appointed as Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975.


A prominent voice in Nigeria’s political affairs, Clark was known for his advocacy for the Niger Delta and his influence in national politics.
