WAEC Sparks Outrage as Students Write English Exam at Night Using Torchlights and Candles

Nigerians on social media have expressed shock and outrage after candidates sitting for the 2025 West African Examination Council (WAEC) English Language exam were forced to write their papers in the dark.

Viral videos showed students in several parts of the country, especially Osun State, writing Parts II and III (Objectives and Theory) of the English exam using torchlights and candles after a lengthy delay. The paper, originally scheduled for 4:00 PM, was not administered until 7:00 PM and lasted until 9:00 PM.

Reports reveal that students had earlier written Part I (Oral English) and waited hours for the next paper. According to a WAEC examiner in Osun State, the delay was due to a leaked question paper, forcing the body to replace the exam at the last minute.

“We discovered that the students had seen the question, so we needed to change it. That’s what caused the delay,” the examiner explained.

A teacher, Jumoke Adedokun, expressed frustration over the situation, saying, “We never planned to stay that late. The hall was lit with phone torchlights, and many parents were panicking and calling to ask about their children. This may lead to mass failure in Osun.”

Disturbing videos online also showed worried parents arriving at school premises late at night, bringing food and water for their children who had stayed at school all day.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians calling it “an embarrassment” and demanding accountability from WAEC.
