Former Minister Lai Mohammed Insists Lekki Toll Gate ‘Massacre’ Never Happened, Labels It Fake News

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has again denied claims that a “massacre” occurred at the Lekki Toll Gate during the 2020 EndSARS protests.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News while discussing his new book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined an Administration, Mohammed said the narrative was built on fake news, misinformation, and unverified social media reports.

He described EndSARS as unfortunate and tragic, but maintained that the incident at Lekki was exaggerated.

According to him, one of the biggest challenges he faced during his time in office was combating misinformation, particularly during the nationwide protests.

He insisted that no family has reported a missing relative linked to the Lekki incident since 2020.

He said:

“EndSARS was unfortunate, it was tragic, but that there was a massacre at the tollgate is fake news. If a man has a goat and the goat does not come home one night, he will go out and look for it. Five years later, nobody has come forward to say their son or ward went to the tollgate and didn’t return.”

Mohammed’s comments have revived public debate surrounding the events of October 20, 2020, a subject that remains sensitive and deeply emotional for many Nigerians.
