Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating hosts Morocco 1–0 in a tense and dramatic final played on Sunday in Rabat.
The final was filled with controversy and high tension, as both teams battled fiercely for the title at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Senegal’s Teranga Lions showed resilience and discipline to emerge victorious and lift the trophy once again.
Morocco came very close to winning the match late in regulation time when the referee awarded them a penalty in the 97th minute. However, the Atlas Lions failed to take advantage of the opportunity, as Brahim Diaz’s weak panenka penalty was brilliantly saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
With the score still level, the match went into extra time. In the 94th minute of extra time, Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal for Senegal. He fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner, leaving the Moroccan goalkeeper with no chance.
Gueye’s goal sealed the win for Senegal and handed them the AFCON title, ending a dramatic final and breaking Moroccan hearts on home soil.
