Social media activist VeryDarkMan has sparked widespread reactions online after criticizing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over its reported arrest of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
In a viral post and accompanying video, VeryDarkMan described the EFCC as “the most corrupt in Nigeria,” alleging that its actions are politically motivated. He claimed that El-Rufai was never investigated while supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election, but is now being targeted because of his alleged opposition to Tinubu’s potential re-election in 2027.
In the video, he stated:
“I will keep saying this, the EFCC is the most corrupt agency in Nigeria. Their arrest of Nasir El-Rufai proves me right. They didn’t arrest him for corruption or embezzlement while he was campaigning for Bola Tinubu in 2023, but now that he opposes Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, they’ve suddenly decided to go after him.”
VeryDarkMan insisted that the situation highlights the selective nature of anti-corruption enforcement in Nigeria, suggesting that political interests influence which individuals are investigated or prosecuted.
The post quickly drew mixed reactions on social media, with some users agreeing that anti-corruption efforts are often politically biased, while others criticized the activist for politicizing the matter.
This latest controversy adds to ongoing debates about the EFCC’s independence and Nigeria’s broader fight against corruption.
