“INEC Cannot Appoint PDP Leadership” – Turaki-Led NWC

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, has insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no power to appoint party leadership.

PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, spoke in response to INEC’s quarterly meeting with political parties, which included representatives of the Abdulraman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC). Ememobong noted that INEC had invited some former members of PDP to the meeting, claiming they represented a “National Caretaker Committee,” but clarified that such a committee does not exist in the PDP constitution.

He described the move as unnecessary and potentially disruptive, warning that the party would respond through legal channels if needed. Ememobong emphasized that INEC should respect ongoing Court of Appeal proceedings, which could impact the matter under consideration.

He reassured PDP members that INEC will not determine the party’s leadership and urged them to remain calm. “The rebirth movement of our party, under the able leadership of Tanimu Turaki, SAN, is steady and secure. It will overcome these challenges and emerge as a stronger, more united party, presenting Nigerians with a credible alternative to the ruling party,” Ememobong said.
