INEC to Review Electoral Act 2026, Set to Release Revised Timetable for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to review the Electoral Act 2026 to ensure full compliance with the law ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, confirmed that the commission will release a revised timetable. Although he did not give a specific date for the announcement, he stressed that INEC remains committed to following the laws of the country.

Oketola made this known during an interview with Sunday PUNCH while responding to calls from some political parties demanding a new election timetable. The parties argued that a fresh schedule had become necessary due to the provisions of the new Electoral Act. They explained that an updated timetable would help them properly organise their primaries and other internal political activities before the elections.

Earlier, INEC had announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections would be held on February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections were scheduled for March 6, 2027.

However, the proposed dates sparked criticism from some groups, especially Muslim organisations, who pointed out that the election period could clash with the holy month of Ramadan.

With growing concerns from political stakeholders and religious groups, INEC’s planned review and revised timetable are expected to address the issues raised ahead of the 2027 polls.
