Presidency Explains Why Tinubu Addressed Plateau Attack Victims at Jos Airport

The Presidency has explained why Bola Tinubu addressed victims of the recent Plateau attacks at the airport in Jos instead of visiting affected communities directly.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the decision was due to logistical and scheduling challenges.

According to the Presidency, the President’s schedule included receiving Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno at the Presidential Villa before proceeding to Ogun State. However, after being briefed by Caleb Mutfwang on the attacks, Tinubu cancelled his trip to Ogun and arranged an emergency visit to Plateau State.

The statement explained that the meeting with the Chadian President, which focused on security cooperation, lasted longer than expected and delayed Tinubu’s departure. Upon arriving in Jos, further logistical issues arose, including the airport’s inability to support night operations due to limited navigational facilities.

As a result, officials organised for victims and community representatives to meet the President at a hall near the airport.

The Presidency added that top security officials, including the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Inspector General of Police, had earlier visited affected areas such as Rukuba.

During the meeting, President Tinubu sympathised with victims, engaged community leaders, and discussed steps to address the recurring violence. He also assured residents of the Federal Government’s commitment to justice and lasting peace, promising to deploy 5,000 AI-powered cameras to strengthen security and help identify those responsible for the attacks.
