The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has openly spoken about the emotional challenges that come with having multiple wives.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the monarch reflected on how his views about polygamy have changed over time. He admitted that when he was younger, he often criticized men who had multiple wives and wondered how they managed such relationships.
According to him, life has now placed him in a similar situation he once judged from afar. He said:
“I am always shy with the numerous wives I have because when I was younger, I used to abuse people with many wives and wonder how they cope, but see me doing same today.”
Although he did not give full details about his decision, the royal father suggested that his role as a traditional ruler and custodian of Yoruba culture plays a major part in his personal life choices.
He also stated that some aspects of his private life may never be made public.
In earlier remarks, the monarch had explained that certain marital decisions are influenced by cultural expectations linked to the throne of Ile-Ife.
The Ooni’s royal household expanded significantly in 2022 when he married six queens within about three months. The queens include Mariam Anako, Elizabeth Akinmuda, Tobiloba Phillips, Ashley Adegoke, Ronke Ademiluyi, and Temitope Adesegun.
His comments have since sparked discussions online about tradition, responsibility, and modern views on polygamy within royal families.
