The Imo State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that students of Government Girls Secondary School, Okigwe Road, Owerri, were abducted by suspected herdsmen.
Earlier reports had alleged that four students of the school were kidnapped, causing concern among residents and parents. However, the police described the report as false, misleading, and without any basis.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the police said the claim was thoroughly investigated following directives from the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso.
According to the statement, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and Coordinator of the Safe School Initiative, Abdullahi Wase, visited the school to verify the report.
During the visit, he met with the school principal, Mrs. Amadi Apolonia, as well as teachers and students, who all confirmed that no abduction had taken place.
The police stressed that all students and staff members are safe and accounted for, and that academic activities at the school continue normally without any disruption.
The command also clarified that the early dismissal of students from some government secondary schools in Owerri was not related to any security threat. According to the police, the arrangement was made because teachers and school staff were scheduled to attend a meeting at the NUT Secretariat.
The Commissioner of Police urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could create fear and panic among the public.
The command further warned that the deliberate spread of false information is a criminal offence and stated that anyone found responsible for circulating fake news would be investigated and prosecuted according to the law.
