Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale has shared her views on marriage, revealing that she does not see it as a do-or-die affair, especially when domestic violence is involved.
Speaking during an interview on the podcast of her colleague Biola Bayo, the actress explained that she would never remain in a marriage where physical abuse exists. However, she noted that ordinary misunderstandings are a normal part of married life and should not automatically lead to separation.
According to Toyin, she entered marriage with the determination to remain committed to her husband as long as there was no violence. She questioned the idea of leaving a marriage over minor disagreements, stating that there is no guarantee that another relationship would be better.
The actress also reflected on her long marital journey, revealing that she got married in January 1993 and welcomed her son, popular singer Mayorkun, whose real name is Mayowa, in March of the same year. She proudly disclosed that she has been married for 33 years and described herself as a calm and gentle person.
How She Started Acting
Speaking about her career, Toyin recalled that acting came naturally to her and quickly became something she loved. She revealed that she began acting professionally in 1988 and received ₦5,000 for her first acting job.
According to her, the project was a memorable experience because the performers were provided with costumes and had the opportunity to perform before a Nigerian president. She said the role became the breakthrough that brought her public recognition and helped launch her career in the entertainment industry.
Family Background and Father's Legacy
The veteran actress also opened up about her family background, revealing that her father had four wives and that each wife gave birth to one child. She described herself as the youngest child in the family.
Toyin spoke fondly of her late father, describing him as a strict disciplinarian who ensured that his family was well prepared for the future. She disclosed that her father made arrangements for his burial before his death by purchasing his burial cloth, preparing his grave, and paying all required church dues.
According to her, he took those steps to prevent his children from facing unnecessary difficulties or financial burdens after his passing. She noted that he ensured all necessary documentation was completed so that the family would not experience stress when the time eventually came.
The actress's revelations offered fans a deeper look into her personal life, long-lasting marriage, successful acting career, and the values instilled in her by her late father.
