Borussia Dortmund defeated Arsenal 3-2 on Sunday to claim the Emirates Cup, handing Mikel Arteta’s side a disappointing defeat just one week before their Community Shield clash with Manchester City.
Dortmund took control of the game in the first half, going into the break with a 2-0 lead after goals from Samuele Inacio and Konstantinos Karetsas.
Arsenal created several opportunities but struggled to make them count. New striker Viktor Gyökeres came close to scoring in the opening half but saw his effort hit the crossbar.
The Gunners eventually pulled a goal back through Ethan Nwaneri, who finished after good work from Christos Tzolis, giving Arsenal hope of mounting a comeback.
However, Dortmund quickly restored their two-goal advantage when Joane Gadou capitalised on a poorly defended corner to make it 3-1.
Tzolis continued to cause problems for the German side and was eventually rewarded after winning a penalty. Gyökeres stepped up and converted from the spot to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
Despite Arsenal's late efforts, Dortmund held on to secure victory and lift the Emirates Cup.
The defeat will give Arteta plenty to consider, particularly in defence and finishing, with Arsenal's Community Shield meeting with Manchester City in Cardiff just seven days away.
