Former Labour Party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has weighed in on the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election, identifying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as the three major contenders in the race.
However, Okonkwo sparked controversy with his description of Peter Obi, saying the former Anambra State governor is “more like a content creator than a contender.” His assessment has generated significant reactions, particularly among supporters of Obi, given Okonkwo’s previous association with the Labour Party and his role as one of Obi’s prominent supporters.
Explaining his position, Okonkwo presented a hypothetical scenario in which Tinubu, Atiku and Obi would be allowed to vote for one another but would not be permitted to vote for themselves.
According to him, Atiku Abubakar would receive two votes, while both Tinubu and Obi would receive zero votes.
“There are three major contenders for the 2027 election: Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi, who is more like a content creator than a contender. If each of them were given an opportunity to vote for each other and not themselves, Atiku would score 2, Tinubu 0, and Obi 0,” Okonkwo said.
His comments have sparked heated discussions across social media, with several Nigerians questioning the reasoning behind his hypothetical calculation. Some users also mocked Okonkwo over what they described as his apparent change of position regarding Peter Obi.
Others questioned whether his assessment was intended to suggest that Atiku currently enjoys stronger political support among the three major contenders, while some commenters simply dismissed the statement as confusing.
