Popular Catholic priest Fr. Kelvin Ugwu has sparked reactions on social media after offering a blunt reflection on life expectancy in Nigeria following the recent deaths of several celebrities.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, the priest drew attention to Nigeria’s reported average life expectancy of about 54 years.
Using the figure to make his point, Fr. Kelvin suggested that Nigerians should begin thinking seriously about their mortality and making funeral arrangements once they reach the age of 50.
His comment was presented as a reality check, encouraging people to recognise the uncertainty of life rather than assume they have many more years ahead.
The priest’s remarks came amid public mourning over the deaths of several well-known figures, which he appeared to use as a reminder that life can be unpredictable.
While his statement was blunt and provocative, it centred on the importance of being conscious of mortality and preparing for the realities of life and death.
