The Ekiti State government has imposed a ban on the proposed three-day kissing marathon event aimed at setting a Guinness World Record in the state. The announcement came after a group called Sugartee advertised their intention to organize the longest kissing marathon on July 7 at a popular amusement park in the state capital.
Reacting swiftly to the development, the Ekiti State Ministry of Arts and Culture issued a statement on July 5, prohibiting the scheduled kissing competition and warning all hoteliers in the state against allowing their premises to be used for such an event. The government further cautioned that severe penalties would be imposed on any hotel found to be facilitating such activities.
In a letter signed by the Director of Tourism, Adebanji Adelusi, on behalf of the permanent secretary of the ministry, Dele Ogunsemoyin, it was emphasized that the planned event, known as 'Kiss-a-thon,' was deemed absurd, unhealthy, immoral, and capable of tarnishing the state's image. The letter expressed concern that the event could have negative consequences on the moral values of Ekiti State's youth.
Consequently, the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Tourism explicitly prohibited the hosting of the event or any similar events in any facility that wished to operate lawfully within Ekiti State. Hoteliers were urged to disseminate this notice among members of the Ekiti State Hoteliers' Association to ensure compliance and prevent any embarrassment to the government and people of Ekiti State.
The decision to ban the kissing marathon underscores the government's commitment to upholding moral standards and safeguarding the reputation of the state.
