Suspected gunmen, believed to be bandits, have created a distressing situation by abducting eight members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), leading to a demand for a ransom of four million Naira in exchange for their safe return.
The unfortunate incident unfolded along a highway within Zamfara State, where the terrorists targeted and kidnapped the eight NYSC members last Friday.
The victims, young individuals who were en route to Sokoto State from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on an Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus to fulfill their mandatory National Service, were abruptly intercepted by the bandits. These criminals halted their journey and subjected them to abduction.
Emmanuel Eket, the father of one of the abducted victims named Glory Thomas, narrated the distressing turn of events through a telephone interview. Eket revealed that his daughter has been maintaining contact with them, sharing updates on the unfolding situation within the bandits' camps.
The bandits took a bold step by making contact using Thomas' phone, notifying her father about the abduction and issuing a demand for a hefty ransom of four million Naira for her release. Eket, recounting his conversation with the abductors, shared that they provided insight into the payment process and instructed him to contact the AKTC.
While Eket briefly spoke with his daughter following the abduction, the connection has since been severed, leaving him in a state of uncertainty. He expressed his concern, sharing, "Since that time, they have not called and I have not spoken with my daughter. I don’t know if they have released them, but my daughter has not called me."
This distressing incident underscores the heightened security concerns within the region and serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by innocent individuals in such situations. The desperate plea for ransom highlights the pressing need for a comprehensive response to ensure the safety and protection of citizens.
