Nigerian gospel music icon, Tope Alabi, took a bold stand at the "Celebrating Jesus 7.0" concert in Ibadan, voicing her concerns over rising discord and rivalry within the gospel music industry. During the concert, organized by Zamar Ministries, Alabi shifted her performance into an impassioned plea, calling on fellow gospel musicians to abandon what she described as “toxic behaviors” that undermine the faith-driven unity the genre was founded on.
In the video circulating online, Alabi’s expression was serious, her tone reflective as she described the culture shift she has witnessed: an industry increasingly defined by jealous rivalries, elitism, and hollow connections. She lamented the distance that some veteran gospel artists have created from younger talents, accusing them of elevating themselves rather than nurturing new voices. Her remarks suggested that younger artists are being pulled into an environment where insincerity and competition overshadow mentorship and spiritual support.
Alabi also took aim at the prevailing culture among top gospel figures who, she implied, have cultivated hidden animosities, setting a damaging precedent. Her call for introspection urged these artists to consider their impact on the next generation of gospel musicians, warning that the industry risks losing its values if this cycle of rivalry continues.
The reactions on social media have been swift, with fans and fellow artists divided. Some praised her courage for speaking out, agreeing that the issues she raised reflect a longstanding, unaddressed problem in the gospel music scene. Others noted that Alabi’s message was a wake-up call, pushing for a renewed commitment to unity, humility, and true fellowship within the gospel community.
