"He Saw Himself as an Emperor" – APC Chieftain Backs Impeachment of Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa

Fouad Oki, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has described the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the immediate past Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as inevitable. Speaking on Channels TV on Monday, January 13, Oki criticized Obasa's leadership style, stating that he had been behaving like an “emperor” over the last eight months.

Obasa was removed from his position following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His impeachment paved the way for Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker, to take over as the new leader of the House.

Oki explained that Obasa’s impeachment had been predictable for anyone familiar with Lagos politics. He highlighted key incidents that demonstrated the former speaker’s overreach, including a notable event during the presentation of the 2025 appropriation bill. Oki recalled that Obasa kept Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, party leaders, and other dignitaries waiting for over four hours without offering any apologies or explanations. When he eventually arrived, he reportedly acted with a sense of dominance, refusing to extend courtesies to anyone.

“He saw himself as an emperor. It became very obvious that there was a need for a change in the leadership of the parliament in Lagos. His behavior and attitude over the last 18 months signaled that this was coming,” Oki said.

The APC chieftain further revealed that the impeachment had the backing of President Bola Tinubu, who intervened after concerns were raised by the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). According to Oki, Tinubu acted as a father figure, calling a meeting to address the issues surrounding Obasa’s leadership. However, Obasa’s resistance to guidance ultimately led to his downfall.

“The president tried to make sense of the observations raised by party elders, but Obasa’s recalcitrant attitude broke the camel’s back,” Oki concluded.

Oki emphasized that the decision was made to protect Lagos’s pivotal role in the political leadership of Nigeria, ensuring stability and progress under President Tinubu’s administration.
