Adebayo Tijani has established himself as a force in the Nollywood film industry. A celebrated director, producer, writer, and actor, he is highly sought after for his professionalism and storytelling prowess. With numerous successful films to his credit, Tijani was ranked the second highest-earning Nollywood director by FilmOne in 2022.
In an exclusive interview with City People’s Head of TV, Sunday Adigun, Tijani shared insights into his career, personal life, and challenges in Nollywood.
Tijani’s love for storytelling began in his primary school days at Community Primary School, Idi Mango, Agege, where he served as the drama president. His leadership continued in secondary school at Alaafin High School, Oyo, where he also became the drama president. However, despite his passion for theatre, he pursued Survey and Geomatics at the Federal School of Survey, Oyo, as a science student.
His rekindled interest in drama led him to St. Andrew’s College of Education (now Ajayi Crowther University), where he attended Yoruba and drama classes informally. He later joined the Prince Demola Adegbite Theatre Group in Oyo Town, working alongside actors like Sanyeri and Golugo. Relocating to Lagos in the early ‘90s, he started as a continuity manager before rising to become a director.
Reflecting on his journey, Tijani emphasized patience and perseverance. He believes success comes at the right time for everyone, encouraging young creatives to remain hopeful. He quoted a Yoruba proverb: “Igbo ti Omo Erin je to fi ri ola ni, Agborin je tan se lobe”—meaning one who struggles today may find success tomorrow.
Discussing the growth of the industry, Tijani stressed the need for government support. He highlighted that post-production costs in other film industries exceed the entire budget of Nigerian productions. Despite Nollywood’s global recognition, he believes financial investment is key to reaching its full potential.
As a highly active filmmaker, Tijani juggles his busy schedule by dedicating time to his family whenever possible. After completing Alakada in Cotonou, he took a three-day break before resuming work on another project. Occasionally, he allows himself a two-week break to recharge.
Tijani’s career is built on a commitment to quality over profit. He believes that maintaining a good reputation in Nollywood is more valuable than financial gain. “A good name is better than gold and silver,” he stated, adding that he carefully selects projects that align with his creative standards.
After years in the industry, Tijani has learned to navigate the difficulties of directing. “At this point, nothing surprises me anymore,” he said, demonstrating his resilience and experience in Nollywood.
With an impressive career and a passion for storytelling, Adebayo Tijani remains one of the industry’s most influential directors, shaping the future of Nigerian cinema.
