Delta State College of Nursing Queries Student Over ‘Na Your Mama’ Viral Video During First Lady’s Visit

The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a query to one of its students, Osato Edobor, over an "unauthorized" video she recorded and shared on social media during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Delta State.

In a letter signed by the institution’s provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, and dated March 27, 2025, Edobor was accused of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording herself singing and posting an “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s arrival at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba. The visit was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where 10,000 professional kits were distributed to midwives in the South-South geopolitical zone.

According to the letter, Edobor’s actions violated the school’s disciplinary rules as outlined in the Student Handbook, specifically under "standardized disciplinary action for some punishable offences No. 8, Page 21." She has been instructed to submit a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours, defending her actions and stating why disciplinary action should not be taken against her.

The controversy stems from a viral video circulating online, showing nursing students at the event seemingly rejecting the First Lady as their "mother." When the event’s Master of Ceremony introduced Oluremi Tinubu as “everyone’s mother,” a customary title given to First Ladies in Nigeria, the students responded in unison with “Na your mama be this,” meaning "This is your mother," in apparent disagreement with the title.

The video has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many linking the students' response to the growing economic hardship and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
