Popular Nigerian rapper and activist, Falz (Folarin Falana), has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling the move unconstitutional.
Falz expressed his displeasure on social media, stating that suspending the elected governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, goes against the law. He explained that governors can only be removed through impeachment, not by presidential suspension.
President Tinubu had declared the state of emergency, citing serious constitutional breaches by the governor, including the collapse of the state’s legislative arm and an increase in militant activities.
However, Falz questioned this justification. In his post, he asked:
"Rivers State, there is ABSOLUTELY NO LAW that allows a president to SUSPEND a governor. A Governor is elected into office and may only be removed by impeachment. Also, is Rivers State at war? Is there an actual breakdown of public order? Is there a threat to the existence of the federation?"
The President’s decision has sparked widespread debate online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over what they see as a violation of democratic principles.
Additionally, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has publicly rejected the state of emergency, accusing President Tinubu of overstepping his authority and undermining democracy by attempting to remove an elected governor without due process.
The controversy continues to draw strong reactions from citizens, politicians, and legal experts, all questioning the legality and implications of this presidential action.
