Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has criticised the Senate over delays in passing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, warning that the situation could harm the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
Falana spoke on Sunday during an interview on Arise News, where he expressed disappointment at the Senate’s decision to set up another committee to review the bill. He noted that the House of Representatives had already passed the amendment bill in December 2025, making the fresh review unnecessary.
According to Falana, the delay appears to be a deliberate move to maintain the current system rather than address urgent electoral reforms. He described the process as a distraction meant to give Nigerians the impression that progress is being made.
“From the conduct of both chambers of the National Assembly, it is clear that they want the status quo to remain,” Falana said. He added that the ongoing back-and-forth is simply meant to create the appearance that the Electoral Act is being worked on.
The Electoral Act Amendment Bill is designed to introduce important reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process. Falana warned that further delays could undermine public trust and negatively affect the conduct of the 2027 elections.
