FIFA to Rule on Nigeria’s Protest Against DR Congo Over World Cup Qualification

FIFA is set to deliver a verdict on Monday, February 16, regarding Nigeria’s petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over alleged use of ineligible players. The decision could change the final picture of Africa’s 2026 World Cup qualification.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged the protest after losing to DR Congo on penalties in last year’s African play-offs in Morocco. The NFF claims that six Congolese players were ineligible, and officials insist their evidence is strong.

“We believe that we have a chance; that is why we petitioned. If we knew we didn’t have a chance, we wouldn’t have petitioned,” said NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, noting that all legal processes were properly followed.

If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favour, the Super Eagles could be reinstated into the intercontinental play-offs in Mexico, where one of the last World Cup tickets is available.

Adding complexity to the case is the reported involvement of CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese national with close ties to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Both Nigeria and DR Congo are reportedly ready to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if dissatisfied with the outcome. FIFA is said to be handling the case carefully to avoid reputational damage.
