Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has sparked conversations online after sharing her honest opinion about handling difficult in-laws.
In a recent interview with Morayo Afolabi Brown on TVC, the veteran actress advised couples to make genuine efforts to build a good relationship with their spouse’s family. However, she warned that if the dislike is rooted in deep prejudice, it may not be worth the struggle.
According to Omotola, some parents are already determined not to like a person, no matter how hard they try. She explained that marriage is already challenging on its own, and starting the journey without love and support from family members can make it even more difficult.
“I will advise that if the families of your spouse don’t like you, try everything you possibly can to make them understand you. But there are some parents that are hell-bent on not liking you regardless of what you do; they already have a prejudice,” she said.
Her statement quickly triggered mixed reactions from social media users, many of whom strongly agreed with her warning.
One user, @iam_dasah, wrote, “Just run. If they don’t like you, especially if they’re low-key tribalistic.”
Another, @the_only_agbeke, said, “I no dey force rubbish, aura for aura, no pretense.”
@favourite_babee reacted with, “God forbid.”
@omoruyi218 commented, “If the family no like you, run. Some will even pass that hatred to your children.”
Similarly, @other.101 wrote, “If they don’t like you, don’t stay.”
@asa_nwayi added, “If they don’t like you, they don’t like you. If you like kpai yourself.”
@iam_florzi also advised, “If someone already holds a prejudice about you, there’s nothing you will do that will change their position. So my dearest sisters, run oh.”
Another user, @naa_akoshia16, wrote, “Run o, don’t force anyone to like you. If it’s not there, you shouldn’t fake it.”
@chiddynwa questioned, “For how long will you continue to perform for them?”
Omotola’s comments have since fueled debate online, with many agreeing that mutual respect and acceptance are important foundations for a successful marriage.
