A former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has spent a second night in detention at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
According to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the former governor has been in custody since Monday over corruption allegations. He is being investigated for alleged fraud during his time in office between 2015 and 2023.
An EFCC source told NAN on Tuesday night that El-Rufai would remain in custody as questioning continues. The source said the former governor was still with investigators and would spend another night at the commission’s headquarters.
The EFCC source also assured that the agency would carry out a thorough and professional investigation into the allegations. However, the official declined to state when El-Rufai might be released or formally charged, explaining that it would depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed the detention in a statement on Monday. He said the former governor honoured the EFCC’s invitation and had frank and productive discussions with officials. Adekeye added that El-Rufai’s legal team commended the professionalism of the investigators.
