Nigerian singer Simi has stirred strong reactions on social media after sharing a bold message about accountability among men.
In a post on X, the music star stated that many men create what she described as “safe spaces” for their friends to continue harmful behaviour instead of correcting them. She explained that simply saying, “I am not like that,” is not enough if a person refuses to speak up when others act wrongly.
Simi also opened up about her personal safety. She revealed that she carries pepper spray whenever she steps out alone or with her daughter. According to her, her fear is not of women but of possible threats from men. Her statement highlighted the level of caution she feels she must take to protect herself and her child.
The most talked-about part of her message was her claim that if someone is not a r@p!st but feels uncomfortable when r@p!sts are being called out, then that person needs to sit down and have a serious conversation with themselves. This remark quickly became the center of online discussions.
Her post generated mixed reactions.
Some users supported her stance, saying men need to hold each other accountable and speak out against harmful behaviour. They argued that no responsible person should defend or ignore predatory actions.
However, others disagreed with her approach. While they admitted that r@pe is wrong and a serious crime, they said conversations should also address false accusations. They warned that discussions should not create division among people who want to make society safer.
A few critics also accused the singer of being selective about speaking on past incidents. Others questioned whether people who are proven to have made false accusations face the same consequences as those convicted of sexual offences.
As reactions continue to pour in, Simi’s comments have once again pushed the topic of accountability, justice, and public safety into public debate.
