Rivers State Assembly Suspends Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara and Deputy Odu

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

The resolution to halt the process was adopted on Thursday during the resumed plenary of the Assembly in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Earlier in 2026, the House had opened impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu over allegations of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the State Assembly complex and spending without legislative approval, among other claims. The proceedings were initiated shortly after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accused the governor of reneging on a peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu in 2025.

President Tinubu met with Fubara and Wike on Sunday, February 8, at the Presidential Residence in Aso Rock, Abuja. Following the meeting, Wike expressed optimism that the long-standing political crisis in Rivers State is nearing a resolution, describing the President’s intervention as decisive.

The suspension marks a significant step toward easing tensions in the state, with both political leaders and stakeholders hopeful for a peaceful resolution.
