Nigerian social media activist VeryDarkMan has openly criticised the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, following a viral WhatsApp screenshot allegedly showing a conversation between the monarch and socialite King Mitchy.
The controversy is linked to the ongoing online dispute between VeryDarkMan (VDM) and Mitchy over school renovation projects. After Mitchy shared a screenshot in which the Ooni appeared to praise her social media efforts and requested to speak with her, VDM reacted strongly.
In his response, VDM pointed out what he described as irony in the situation. According to him, he would normally bow to greet the Ooni out of respect, yet the monarch was the one reaching out to Mitchy privately.
“If I see the Ooni of Ife, I will bow down to greet him, whereas he is bowing down to Mitchy on WhatsApp. A whole Ooni of Ife, I am disappointed,” he said.
VDM also claimed that Mitchy had shown disrespect toward the monarch by allegedly boasting that “even this king had to find my contact.” He suggested that such familiarity could make her disregard others as well.
He further compared the situation to the Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade, stating that such an occurrence would not be expected from him. He ended his remarks by sending a respectful message to the Alaafin and wishing him a successful reign.
The development has sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating respect, influence, and the public image of traditional rulers in the digital age.
