FAAN Denies Aircraft Hijack Claim at Akure Airport, Confirms Arrest of Four Suspected Bandits

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed reports claiming there was an attempted aircraft hijacking at Akure Airport, describing the information circulating online as false and misleading.

In separate posts shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the aviation authority clarified that its earlier statement about a security operation around the airport was misinterpreted by some online platforms. FAAN stressed that its official press release never mentioned or suggested that a hijacking incident had occurred.

According to the agency, the reports spreading on social media were inaccurate and did not reflect the real situation at the airport.

FAAN said:

“There was no part of the press release that mentioned or suggested a ‘hijack.’ Please refer to the official statement for accurate information.”

The authority also addressed a viral image that had been shared alongside an online publication claiming to show the alleged incident. FAAN explained that the image was completely false and had no connection to any event at Akure Airport.

The agency further stated:

“This image is entirely false and does not represent any incident at Akure Airport. No gory scene occurred as depicted. Kindly refer to the attached press release for clarity.”

Providing further clarification, FAAN confirmed that security agencies carried out a coordinated operation around the airport area. During the operation, four suspected bandits were arrested near the airport premises.

The authority explained that the operation involved aviation security officials working together with local security agencies to maintain safety within and around the airport environment.

FAAN urged the public and media outlets to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that could cause unnecessary panic among travellers and residents.
