A fire erupted at the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation building in Abuja on Monday morning, causing major traffic congestion around the Federal Secretariat.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m., prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene as thick, dark smoke billowed from an upper floor of the multi-storey building. Eyewitness footage circulating on social media showed dense black smoke rising from Section C of the building within the Secretariat complex.
As firefighters worked to contain the blaze, security officials diverted vehicles away from the affected area, leading to significant gridlock on roads near the Head of Service office and surrounding routes.
Several motorists were unable to use their usual paths, while passengers were forced to leave their vehicles and continue on foot due to road restrictions and the heavy traffic.
An officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps told Punch that the traffic situation “is a result of the fire incident at the Office of the Head of the Civil Service. We are managing the situation.”
Authorities have urged commuters to plan alternative routes as the fire response continues.
