Social media personality Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, has said he will not return to Benin City despite being summoned by the Benin Traditional Council (BTC).
Peller made this known during a livestream from his nationwide tour, where he explained that he would not honour the invitation. He also rejected the idea of sending members of his management team in his place, stating that he did not want anyone to risk being “held hostage.”
The issue began after Peller allegedly entered the Oba of Benin Palace without proper authorisation on March 6, 2026. The Benin Traditional Council described the act as a serious violation of palace protocol and a disrespect to its sacred traditions.
In an official statement signed by BTC Secretary Frank Irabor, the council confirmed that disciplinary actions have been taken against those involved in the incident. A chief linked to the breach has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member, Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for causing a public disturbance.
The council also disclosed that a queen connected to the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to her removal in line with Benin traditions.
Peller was asked to appear before a committee of chiefs and submit a written apology but reportedly failed to attend. The council has insisted that he must appear in person and warned that further legal action may be taken if he refuses.
The BTC reaffirmed that the Benin Palace remains a highly respected institution with long-standing traditions, stressing its commitment to protecting the dignity and sanctity of the Oba and the palace.
