At least 17 members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress to the National Democratic Congress during plenary on Tuesday.
The lawmakers, who announced their defection through separate letters read on the floor of the House, said their decision was due to ongoing internal crises within the ADC. They described the issues as unresolved problems affecting the party from the national level down to local wards.
One of the defectors, Yusuf Umar Datti, who represents Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam Federal Constituency in Kano State, said the instability in the party made it difficult for him to effectively serve his constituents.
Similarly, Harris Okonkwo, representing Idemili North/Idemili South Federal Constituency in Anambra State, explained that his decision followed wide consultations with political stakeholders and members of his constituency.
Other lawmakers who joined the defection include Sani Adamu, Thaddeus Attah, Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, Lilian Obiageli, OluwaSeyi Sowunmi, Peter Anekwe, Zakari Umar Mukhtari, George Olawande, Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, Umezuruike Manuchim, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Kamilu Ado.
The development marks another shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as party defections continue to shape alignments ahead of future elections.
