“We Have a Way of Ignoring Important Issues and Giving More Attention to Distractions” – Actor Kunle Afod Slams Nigerians

Nollywood actor Kunle Afod has criticized Nigerians for what he described as a growing habit of focusing more on gossip than on serious national issues.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, the actor said many Nigerians quickly abandon important conversations as soon as gossip or entertainment appears online. He explained that this behaviour has made people pay more attention to distractions instead of issues that truly affect the country.

He called for a change in attitude, urging Nigerians to be more focused and responsible in how they engage with public discussions.

He wrote:

“Nigerians have a way of ignoring important issues the moment they find something or someone to gossip about. We often give more attention to distractions than to matters that truly deserve our focus. It’s time to change that.”

Mixed Reactions Trail His Statement

His comment sparked widespread reactions on social media, with users divided in their opinions.

Some supported his view, agreeing that Nigerians are easily distracted and often fail to focus on critical issues such as insecurity and national problems.

One user wrote: “Louder, sir, tell them awon alabosia. Bandit dey knock their door.”

Another said: “Na little thing dey distract Nigerians.”

Others expressed concern about the state of the country, with one commenter writing: “I think about those kids in the bush every day. Naija is sick.”

A user also added: “Children still dey inside bush, they don forget that one.”

Some reactions also pointed fingers at different groups in society. One user commented: “Even mothers, God Abeg.” while another wrote: “No be only youth o, full housewives too dey there o.”

However, not everyone agreed fully with Afod’s approach. One user suggested he should take more direct action, writing: “Oga go join VDM for Ibadan voice out and join the protest. Leave the online youth.”

The debate continues online as Nigerians remain divided over issues of public distraction, activism, and responsibility in addressing national challenges.
