Nollywood actress Ronke Oshodi has opened up about a difficult period in her life when she was seriously ill, revealing that the financial burden of her treatment was overwhelming.
Speaking on African A-List, the actress expressed gratitude to God, socialite MC Oluomo, and her colleagues for supporting her during the challenging period. According to Ronke, the cost of her medication alone reached ₦800,000 every month, highlighting the severity of the financial strain she faced while battling the illness.
Ronke said:
“Thank God that He is God, and thanks to MC Oluomo and my colleagues who kept me alive today, do you know what it means for someone to buy drugs worth 800,000 naira every month?”
Ronke Reveals She Joined Cele During Her Illness
The actress also spoke about her religious journey, explaining that she joined Cele—a reference to the Celestial Church of Christ—during the period when she was seriously ill.
Ronke, however, stressed that her personal religious choice does not mean she looks down on people who practise other faiths. She made it clear that she does not condemn other religions.
“It was when I was terribly sick that I joined Cele. As for me, I don’t condemn other religions,” she stated.
Sotayo Reached Out Despite Years of Silence
One of the more emotional revelations from Ronke was her account of her relationship with fellow actress Sotayo.
According to Ronke, the two actresses had not spoken for approximately five or six years following a disagreement. She explained that although they were not necessarily enemies, the disagreement created distance between them.
Ronke said their relationship had become so distant that when they encountered each other at social gatherings, they would simply walk past each other without exchanging greetings.
However, the situation changed when Sotayo learned that Ronke had fallen seriously ill.
Despite their years of silence, Sotayo reportedly sent Ronke ₦150,000 to support her during her illness.
Ronke expressed particular appreciation for the gesture, noting that she does not casually mention people's names when recounting those who helped her.
“Take Sotayo, I don’t just mention names lightly but I will mention hers. Sotayo and I hadn’t spoken in a long time, not that we were at war, but we had a little disagreement. The last time Sotayo and I spoke was 5 or 6 years ago. But when she heard that I fell sick, she sent me N150,000 naira!”
Ronke’s account highlights not only the financial challenges that can accompany prolonged illness, but also how unexpected acts of kindness can transcend personal disagreements. Despite years without communication, Sotayo’s decision to support her former colleague during a difficult moment left a lasting impression on Ronke.
The actress’ story also underscores the importance of support systems, as she credited her faith, friends, colleagues and individuals such as MC Oluomo for helping her through one of the most difficult periods of her life.
