The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued an apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a statement released on behalf of the NFF Executive Committee, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed deep regret over the outcome, acknowledging the disappointment it has caused millions of Nigerians who passionately support the women’s national team.
Gusau said the Super Falcons entered the competition carrying the hopes of the nation, as well as significant support and goodwill from the Federal Government. He admitted that the federation and team had been unable to produce the result expected at this stage of the tournament.
The NFF also issued a special apology to President Tinubu, recognising what it described as his strong commitment to Nigerian sports, particularly the development and welfare of women athletes.
The federation recalled the substantial rewards, national honours, houses and reception granted to the Super Falcons following their previous WAFCON triumph, noting that the President and his administration had continued to demonstrate support for Nigerian football.
According to the NFF, it is therefore with “genuine humility and regret” that it acknowledges its inability to repay the confidence and support of the President with the expected result.
Beyond the President, the football federation extended its apology to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and Nigerian football supporters both at home and abroad.
Despite the setback, the NFF’s statement reflects its acknowledgement of the disappointment surrounding the Super Falcons’ campaign and its responsibility to the millions of Nigerians who continue to support the team.
