Sunday Igboho filed a $1 million lawsuit against Benin Republic for illegal imprisonment and human rights violations.


Sunday Igboho has filed a $1 million lawsuit against d Republic of Benin at the Court of Justice of (ECOWAS) for general damages for each day he has been imprisoned in d country. 

Igboho asked d court to declare that Benin's actions regarding his "unlawful, arbitrary arrest & detention, violating his freedom of movement, his right to an unbiased trial within a reasonable time," violated his right to dignity as a person, according to the suit filed by his lawyer, Tosin Ojaomo.

According to Igboho's lawyer, the order is being requested under Article 59 of the Rules of Procedure, an Expedited Procedure, and Hearing, involving his client's incarceration and release.

After being raided at his Soka Ibadan house by Department of State Services operatives on July 1, 2021, Igboho fled to the Benin Republic on his way to Germany but was apprehended by Brigade Criminelle agents on July 19, 2021.

In an application dated February 10, 2022, Ojaomo requested an order for Igboho's immediate and unconditional release, as well as his Nigerian passport, pending the outcome of the action and assessment of damages.

 Speaking further, Ojaomo said

“While imprisoned in Benin, Chief Adeyemo’s lawyer filed a lawsuit on his behalf in the Oyo State High Court, seeking damages against Nigeria’s attorney general, Abubakar Malami, the State Security Services (“SSS”), and Central Bank of Nigeria (“CBN”).
