The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended Samuel Shegun, a 32-year-old man, in connection with the brutal killing of his mother, Esther Adekanla, known as Hadiza Nakowa. Adekanla, a respected restaurant owner, was discovered lifeless in her Dutse town home on Thursday, February 15, 2024. Tragically, her 11-year-old daughter, Christiana, was found unconscious in a locked storage room.
Commissioner of Police CP AT Abdullahi addressed reporters at the command headquarters in Dutse on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, revealing that the suspect was tracked down through the victim's phone records. Shegun claimed he intervened to protect his sister from their mother, who he alleged was wielding a knife during a confrontation, leading to an accidental injury.
Detailing the events, CP Abdullahi stated: "Detectives from State Criminal Investigation Department Dutse (SCID) arrested Samuel Shegun in connection with the case of brutal killing of his mother... The suspect was arrested via tracking of the deceased phone number, which linked him to the offence."
The initial discovery of Adekanla's body prompted swift police action. "On receipt of the report, detectives... found her body in the sitting room, lying lifeless in a pool of blood," the CP recounted. "Similarly, her young house help... was found locked in a store with cuts on her head alive, but unconscious."
CP Abdullahi outlined the suspect's account of events: "He disclosed that... his mother... started fighting with the young girl... In his effort to rescue the girl, he dragged her back when they all fell, she cut herself on the neck with the said knife." Subsequently, Shegun admitted to stealing his mother's phones, locking the house, and fleeing the area.
While Christiana is undergoing medical treatment for her injuries, the tragic loss of Esther Adekanla has left the community reeling. The investigation into this harrowing incident continues, as authorities seek to unravel the full details surrounding the case.
